I have been a professional painter for 30 years after pursuing a successful career as an illustrator. My main interests are in painting the landscape and capturing the world around us using a semi abstract approach to my chosen subject. I enjoy the pursuit and representation of fleeting light, atmosphere, weather and time of day and season in my work. I take my inspiration mostly from coastal landscape subjects, the countryside and architectural subjects, cities, towns, village and old buildings.
I work in Water-based, mixed media and watercolour and Acrylic on paper, board and canvas, using unusual tools and techniques to produce textures of broken and glazed layers in loose, representational paintings. I work quickly after careful planning of content, composition, media and colour and I hope to exploit the serendipitous effects of water-based media to create exciting, spontaneous work.
My work is shown in many galleries in England and Scotland, and I was voted a member of THE ROYAL INSTITUTE OF PAINTERS IN WATERCOLOURS, the RI, in May 2010, and a member of THE SOCIETY OF GRAPHIC FINE ARTISTS, SGFA, in 2009.
I regularly run Painting courses and holidays in UK and Europe, teaching demonstrations for Art Groups and Societies.
I exhibit my paintings in a number of Galleries in England and Scotland. I have made 5 DVD’s for TOWNHOUSE FILMS showing the way I work and build a painting from start to finish, showing planning of composition, choice of media and execution of the work.
I am a regular contributor to The ARTIST magazine explaining in step-by-step illustrations how I do a painting in a chosen subject.
I also have a book published by BATSFORD PUBLISHING and called “MIXED MEDIA LANDSCAPES AND SEASCAPES”. The book covers my total approach to the way I paint.
